New Ride

Cassidy the two-legged miracle cat has come a long way since being rescued last year by TinyKittens, a non-profit rescue located in Fort Langley, BC. He continues to get around in his custom-built wheelchair while receiving daily physical therapy in hopes that it will help make him a candidate for prosthetic legs one day. Recently Cassidy has changed it up by  enjoying a new ride, one that has become a favorite with internet cats and viewers.

Most kittens aren’t as lucky as Cassidy, which is why it is so important to help your friends, neighbors and co-workers understand how important it is to spay and neuter. Only 1 in 12 kittens born ever finds a home, and only 25% of kittens born to unowned cats will survive longer than 6 months. The rest will die from starvation, disease, predators or cruelty. Here’s more about our work with feral cats, and some of the shocking things we’re learning.” – TinyKittens.com/ferals

TinyKittens is doing amazing work to help cats including fostering, education, TNR, research, and Feral Cat Mapping. They are always looking for volunteers, foster parents or donations to help them continue to help cats like Cassidy. If you aren’t in a position to volunteer or donate you can be a voice for cats everywhere by simply sharing his story.

Tiny Wheels

Cassidy the kitten had a very rough start. Born to a feral mom, he spent his first weeks fighting for his life and by the time he was found he was starving to death and missing his back legs.

TinyKittens, a volunteer-run non-profit society working to improve the lives of cats and kittens in need in Fort Langley, British Columbia rescued Cassidy after he was spotted on a rural property. By the time he was rescued he had already lived 9 weeks with his injuries.

Shelly Roche of Tiny Kittens, who trapped Cassidy, tells the Langley Advance that she “could feel all his little bones” and that he had survived not being able to walk on his back legs likely from birth. His mother could have accidentally bit off his feet, if they were tangled in the umbilical cord. Besides his injures he was also suffering for an a septic E. coli infection and the first vet who examined him wasn’t sure if he would survive.

Cassidy however had a very strong will to live and after he was brought to Mountain View Veterinary Hospital where his wounded legs were cleaned up, Tiny Kittens put him on their live internet feed. They wanted to give Cassidy the best chance possible to have a good quality of life and leveraged their large online following asking for help with obtaining a pet prosthetic.

Lucky for Cassidy the good folks at Handicapped Pets Canada approached Tiny Kittens and offered to provide a custom-built tiny wheelchair to allow him to run around using his front legs.

Roche  says that they are “even looking into implanted prosthetic feet” like the ones Oscar the bionic cat got when he lost his front legs in a combine harvester and became the first feline recipient of special prosthetic implants. Two students have also stepped up and suggested using their school’s 3D printer to make progressively larger wheelchairs as Cassidy grows.

In the meantime they are ensuring Cassidy is happy and on the road to living a full life. He is off his pain medication and is being a typical kitten playing with his brother Topper and other cats. Roche says he is at about “40 percent” when it comes to using an accessible litter box made for him.

Once Cassidy is ready, he will need a forever home where someone is willing to provide him with lots of love and care.

You can watch Cassidy live on the TinyKittens web cam here and follow him on Facebook for updates and more videos.

Fate on the 427 a Rescue Story

Mandi Howard, a nurse from the Humber River Hospital’s emergency department, was in the right place at the right time, you might even call it fate. In this case Mandi’s timing would prove to be life saving.

Last week Mandi Howard was driving along Toronto’s busy Highway 427 when she noticed something being thrown from a car, at first she thought it was just fast food trash, but very quickly realized it was fur – it was an animal.

Howard pulled over just before the Gardiner Expressway and carefully got out of her car, walking along the shoulder of the highway as cars whizzed by. Halfway towards the animal, she realized what it was.”

The kitten, named Pedro was rescued from the side of Highway 427 and taken in to the Toronto Humane Society, where he’s been recovering.

She pulled over to the side and walked along the shoulder of the highway, waved to slow drivers down and quickly scooped up the kitten who was in bad shape.

“His poor little mouth is busted open and he’s got a tooth missing in the front and his paw was really deformed.”

Mandi cradled and supported the tiny screaming kitten who started to quiet down as soon as she began to sing along to Taylor Swifts Blank Space on the radio, while she rushed him to the Toronto Humane Society where he received emergency vet care. Little Pedro was treated for scrapes, the vets sewed up his split lip and put splints on his back legs. All of the toes on the kitten’s back paws were broken.

Mandi, who had lost her own cat named May a week earlier, plans to adopt Pedro and said that it was May who guided her to Pedro “This was my day off. I wasn’t even supposed to be there,” she said. “She brought me there for a reason.” via the Toronto Star

Mandi is no stranger to animal rescue as she also runs Mama Meows Cat Rescue based in Oshawa, Ontario where her current list of cats up for adoption come from the high-kill New York Shelter (NYACC). The rescue specializes in very sick and orphaned kittens but is looking to expand and be able to help all cats and kittens. If you would like to become a foster parent, donate or volunteer your time to the rescue please contact them here.

An Indiegogo campaign has also been started to help pay for Pedro’s medical costs called The 427 Kitten and as of today has raised $5,885 in donations, well above what was required. The remaining funds will be put to good use and be donated to the Toronto Humane Society to help other animals in need.

The OSPCA is investing and looking for leads, if you were traveling on the 427 last Wednesday December 3 and witnessed the kitten being tossed from a car window, or saw anything that could help with this case, please call Constable John Ennis at 416-235-4981 of the Ontario Provincial Police. It is hopeful that a witness will come forward to help catch the abuser who committed this horrible crime.

Renovations and Kitten Rescue

If you watch HGTV here in Canada you may be familiar with a show called Income Property, it’s about home renovations and…a little kitten rescue on the side. Host Scott McGillivray and crew found a stray kitten on the side of the road while heading up to cottage country to do some work so they picked the kitten up, had him vetted and found him a home.

I think I like this show even more now. 🐱

Hero Wednesday – Whiskers on the 401

On the afternoon on July 5 here in Toronto two brothers – Duff and Brock Jones saw something on one of our busiest highways, the #401. They were on their way to a soccer game here in the city when they spotted an animal abandoned on the concrete shoulder. They decided to turn around to try and save this tiny animal knowing that it would not survive much longer. It was a kitten, desperately trying to climb up over the concrete median.

They were able to catch the kitten before she escaped and contacted Forgotten Ones Cat Rescue – Richmond Hill, Ontario, where their family had adopted two cats from, for help.

The kitten named Lara Croft was taken to the vet for a check up and is reported to be doing well. As for our heroes, your act of kindness out-plays any soccer game in my books. 🐱

Kitten Rescue – Into the Woods

I come across lots of stories about cat, kitten rescues and I always find it disturbing that people can abandon, turn out a cat in the cold or worse. It angers me to read these things and it should anger anyone really but  It should also inspire us to act, to be aware and to encourage acts of compassion. What I love reading are the positive stories that come out of these events and this particular Kitten Rescue just really stuck with me. When you see these little babies you will understand.

While a couple were walking through the woods, they came across 4 tiny little kittens, running up to them. They knew right away that they couldn’t leave them there.
“Walking through the woods at Spring Creek Park in NW Houston, TX..we stumbled across 4 abandoned kittens in the middle of the woods. They came right up to us, which makes us think they’re not feral, and weren’t born in the woods. Most likely, someone abandoned them out at the park.”

I don’t know who these people are but I want to thank them. I hope others will be inspired but your act of kindness. ❤ 🐱
