For two days in June, Los Angeles will become the center of the ‘Cativerse’ when it hosts the first ever convention and expo for cat lovers.

No this isn’t a dream, this is real.

When I first read about CatConLA last fall I knew I had to go, so I booked off vacation time at work and redeemed my frequent flyer miles. The tag line “It’s like Comic-Con but for cat people” said it all. This was the ground-breaking and litter-box shaking event cat lovers everywhere had been waiting for.

The event takes place June 6 and 7 at The Reef in Downtown LA

“Part expo, part symposium, CatConLA showcases the world’s top cat-centric merchandise including furniture, art, toys and clothing for those of us who possess a great love of the feline, as well as conversations with some of the top cat experts in the world.”

The weekend is guaranteed to be filled with fun but it will also be about giving back. CatConLA will be donating a dollar for every ticket sold, as well as a portion of the proceeds from CatConLA merchandise, to benefit FixNation a non-profit organization committed to helping cats in Los Angeles. FixNation provides a free, full-time spay/neuter clinic for cats as well as low-cost spay/neuter services for owned pet cats.

Lil Bub or Pudge the Cat Meet and Greet packages, that include a two-day pass to CatConLA, are available for fans who want a little one on one time with their favorite internet cat. Lil Bub will donate a portion of the ticket price to both Lil Bub’s Big Fund and FixNation, while a portion of the ticket price from the Pudge the Cat Meet and Greet will go to FixNation.

Meow Mix The Remix

Fan of country music or not this catchy tune by rising country artist J.R. Moore will have you humming Meow Meow Meow Mix all the way to the store. Here two of the world’s most powerful artistic forces are combined “country music” and “Internet cats.”

Now if you prefer something from the rave music genre and cats with lasers, because they go so perfectly together, I would suggest checking out the EDM Cat Remix by Ashworth.

Feeling inspired? Meow Mix , has a contest to give would-be artists a chance to win a trip to Hollywood by doing just that: remixing the Meow Mix jingle. Simply visit http://meowmix.com/itsmeowtime/ and upload your new version of that familiar tune.

Two Cities Two Cat Art Shows

I finally made it to the Cat Art Show at the Steam Whistle Brewing here in Toronto, with a day to spare! The show titled Meow Wow, A Cat & Lady Art Show ran for the month of August and showcased cat-themed art work by local female artists.

10% of art sales were donated to Cat Busters Animal Rescue, a registered charity dedicated to the rescuing and re-homing of companion animals. 🐱

There were various groupings and styles of work, I had a few pieces that I personally gravitated to including the series by artist Meg Simmons. This series has Grumpy Cat, Maru, Lil Bub, Colonel Meow and Henri Le Chat Noir.

I love the simplistic style, colors and how the eyes of the cats engage the viewer making it hard not to fall in love with the one of the feline subjects. Gwendolyn has a wonderful series called Parliamentary Cats, of the cats of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, and whether a fan of the famous felines or not you will find the images extremely endearing. What make this series so special is that the actual Parliament Hill Cat Sanctuary was officially dismantled in 2013 with the few remaining residents being adopted by the volunteers.

Grumpy Cat Came To Canada…It Was Awful

This weekend the feline internet sensation and reigning queen of “NO” Grumpy Cat (aka Tardar Sauce) made her final stop on a whirlwind North American Book Tour for the book The Grumpy Guide to Life in my home town of Toronto, and as you can imagine it was Awful…but in a good way.

Grumpy fans, lined up early at Indigo book store in the Eaton Centre to obtain a wrist band, thus ensuring a meeting with the feline enigma. After all, many of us thought we may never have this chance again.

Excited fans came from all over, they were beyond thrilled that Grumpy Cat decided to stop in Toronto, and it was perfectly fine that it was a no hands on policy, just the thought of being close to her was enough.

The fans knew Grumpy Cat would likely be curled up sleeping in her cat bed but hoped she would grace us with that adorable Grumpy face. The fact that she was sleeping didn’t discourage anyone and as one fan remarked “That’s great, she is just being a cat!”. Grumpy Cat you should know, that you can do no wrong…or is it right?

When the time finally came to step up to the coveted spot beside her bed, for some the joy factor was too much to handle and a smile instead of the trademark frown appeared on their faces, Grumpy Cat blissfully unaware of the happiness she has brought so many. I say if this is what Grumpy is, then we need more please.
