Feline Friday Volunteer Edition

These last couple of weeks while volunteering at the animal shelter I met a few cats that were exceptional superstars, having been rescued from hoarders or unsafe conditions.  Other than initial shyness or a distinguishing physical characteristic, upon meeting these gentle and affectionate cats one would never know they had come from less than ideal situations.

Today, Let’s Talk About Your Cat features a trio of rescue felines who found their home with Toronto artist Melanie Lowe.

Thanks to Melanie for sharing her story and her adorable cats!

Poppy aka the shy guy

Q Describe your cats personalities

ML Tobias is a quirky cat. He is pretty hilarious at times and very particular about certain things. Sometimes he can be a little bossy with the other cats. He has become very chatty and will ask you to turn on the shower for him, even though he has fresh water in his dish.

Sid is the sweetest cat I’ve ever met. She has a sleek black coat and loves to play fetch with a little pink ball. If you don’t throw it when she wants you to, she’ll tell you. Quite often she will carry her toys upstairs and onto the bed on the middle of the night for play time.

Poppy adores Tobias…he looks up to him like a big brother. They play together all the time and snuggle in their favorite chair for hours. He is still sometimes kind of shy, but he is coming out of his shell. We named him Poppy because he looks like a small old man with his long white whiskers and ear tufts.

Q How did your cats come into your life?

ML All adopted. Tobias is from Toronto Animal Services. Sid and Poppy are both from Toronto Cat Rescue. Adopt, don’t shop!

The cat cave

Q What made you choose each cat?

ML Hmm, I think it most cases, the cat chooses you, but there has to be something that draws you to them. There is always something in the interaction when you first meet, like they fall asleep in your arms.

Q What is your first memory or experience with cats?

ML I can’t be sure as I have always lived with at least one cat!

Melanie will be combining her love of cats and art for a project called They Choose You which aims to help homeless felines get adopted. The show runs at Artscape Youngplace November 22-23.

The Monroe Montage

My friend’s had been taking care of a couple of strays in their neighborhood when a small group of black and white cats showed up at their back door. They started feeding them and proceeded to have all the cats vetted and adopted out, all except this extremely intelligent and soulful male which they had named Monroe. He obviously loved being in their backyard, getting three meals a day and lots of attention, however he showed little interest in coming inside.

Are you impressed by my agility and balance?

That all changed last summer when I was visiting and Monroe decided to follow me inside the house and proceeded to sit with me on the couch like it was all routine…my friends, who became his official pet parents, were in awe. Monroe, aka Tori’s cat because I was the one who brought him in, got a wonderful home and now I get to cat sit for him whenever my friends are on holiday.

My Little Panther

This week marks the 4 year anniversary of the passing of my cat Simon. Sometimes it feels like I had to say goodbye yesterday and other days if feels like a lifetime ago. Simon lived a wonderful 18 years, and maybe a little selfishly I wished it could have been longer.

The Early Years

Simon was a very kind, gentle spirit who loved everyone he met including Spinner, a later addition to our cat family, and Cleo our Tabby cat who had no patience for him. She often walked by giving him a smack with her paw right on his face, leaving Simon shocked every time. He never retaliated however, instead he would sneak up to sleep by her side and even wash her problem ear as she got older.

Simon washes his brother Spinner

Simon adored his brother Spinner and, after an initial hiss upon first meeting, they became best buddies. Simon was talkative, inquisitive and always wanted to know what the humans were up to. There are many fond memories of Simon during the holidays as he loved to hang out with guests and would sit at the dinner table like a proper gentleman.

Simon enjoys a spot in the winter sun

Simon had green eyes and a pure black coat with a blue tint, fading slightly towards the end of his life to reveal a subtle mink color…and a few grey hairs. I always called him my little panther, for he resembled one perfectly in miniature, sleek beauty and grace. One of my favorite pictures of him above, the late winter sun striking his fur in such a way that it looks like he is shimmering.

Simon helps me get organized. One the last photos taken of him

Simon brought years of joy, comfort and humor to our lives and even my dad, who wasn’t a cat person and called him Sparky, was very upset at his passing.  Despite knowing it was his time and that I was doing the right thing, I still went through all the typical stages of grieving including questioning my decision.

There was an emptiness and pain present immediately after he died, everywhere I turned there was a reminder of him and I didn’t know what to do with myself. So I painted his portrait, the only way I could express what I was feeling.

Simon

A moment captured, Simon looking down and away as he was in the habit of doing when being photographed,  a wonderful cat with a wise old soul who will always be remembered.

One of the many lasting gifts Simon gave me was a love and appreciation for black cats, and with Black Cat Appreciation Day on Sunday August 17, I find it the perfect time to celebrate his life and spread the love for all the little panthers everywhere.

Kittens or Lattes? How About Both!

I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a Caturday afternoon then at the cool pop-up event held by Toronto’s first soon to be cat cafe.

Toronto has been waiting anxiously and has been a little envious that cities in Japan, the UK and US already have theirs. Like most cat lovers in Toronto I have been following the progress of the indiegogo campaign for Pet Me Meow – Toronto’s First Cat Cafe, co-founded by Ashkan Rahimi and Jeff Ro.

Cats, Cat Cafe, Toronto, Pet Me Meow, Indiegogo campaing, cat adoptionWhile the actual cafe is slated to open fall 2014 they did something brilliant and had a Cat Cafe pop-up. The event was held over 3 days this weekend and tickets could be purchased in advance or at the door. I clearly wasn’t taking any chances so I got mine in advance, never underestimate the number of ailurophiles present in the city!

A path of chalk paw prints marked the way to the location where you were greeted and registered. You could purchase snacks, lattes, t-shirts emblazoned with the Pet Me Meow logo or other cat themed merchandise supplied by Toronto Cat Rescue (TCR) who the cafe is partnering with to ensure lots of cats are given a chance at being adopted into their forever home.

Groups of people who booked a time slot were taken upstairs to the kitten room and I think we were all like kids in a candy shop. It was a very happy place, not just for the myriad of kitties running, playing, cuddling or sleeping, but also for the people, many of whom were sporting a pair of cat ears.

Kittens taking a brief rest before playing again

I chatted with one of the co-founders Jeff Ro about the cafe and it was really great to see the first priority of the pop-up was the well-being of the cats. I had no concerns as each of the kittens were literally having the time of their lives. All the people there were really respectful and were more than happy to serve whatever needs a particular kitten had – if they wanted more play they got it, if they wanted cuddles – no problem, and if they wanted a cozy place to sleep away the afternoon? Many laps were more than happy to accommodate.

Giving some lap time to a sleepy little fellow

TCR handles the adoptions and it was clear from talking with Jeff that the cafe was also going to be a place to educate potential pet parents on the responsibility of cat adoption. This got a big thumbs up from me as the city while feline friendly, has a huge issue with stray/homeless cats. Pet Me Meow shares the same vision as TCR and their partnership will hopefully be another vehicle for making Toronto an even better place for cats.

During the 3 day event only kittens were brought in, and many were adopted, but the actual cafe when open will also include older cats, this gets another thumbs up.

My hour time slot with the cats flew by quickly and I asked if anyone has been forced to leave because they didn’t want to (I remarked that I may have been the first), but was reassured everyone had been really cooperative 🐱

If you missed the event not to worry, fall is not that far off and you can check out their campaign online, help contribute and score yourself some cool swag while ensuring you get a spot at the pre-opening. Whether you plan to visit the cafe to play with cats or adopt, Pet Me Meow is sure to be one of the best places in the city for cat lovers.
